Objective To investigate whether a single epileptic seizure can cause brain injury. Methods From June 2007 to November 2009, the levels of neuron-specific enolase (NSE) in serum and cerebrospinal fluid of 40 patients within 24 h after seizure and 40 patients in control group were detected by electrochemiluminescence. The levels of myelin basic protein (MBP) in serum and cerebrospinal fluid were determined by ELISA. Results The level of NSE in serum and cerebrospinal fluid of epilepsy group was significantly higher than that in control group (P <0.01). There was no significant difference in serum MBP level between epilepsy group and control group (P> 0.05). The level of MBP in epileptic group was higher than that in control group (P <0.05). Conclusion The serum level of NSE and the level of MBP in cerebrospinal fluid were significantly increased in patients with single epilepsy, suggesting that single epileptic seizures may lead to neuronal injury.
