Since the second half of the 1980s, the economic structure in the western Pacific has undergone obvious changes in both supply and demand. The above changes took place in the order of Japan’s NIES (emerging industrial countries and regions) to ASEAN in the wake of the substantial appreciation of the yen after the Prachuap Khiri Khalil in 1985. Such changes have further enhanced the status of the Western Pacific in the world economy and are contributing to the development of economic relations between the countries of the Western Pacific and between the Western Pacific and other regions.
