饮茶效用的发展约可分为五个时期:一、从神农时期到春秋前期,最初作为祭品;二、从春秋后期到西汉初期,逐渐作为饭菜;三、从西汉初期到西汉中期,推广为药用;四,从西汉后期至三国,发展为宫廷的高贵饮料;五、从西晋到隋朝形成为普通饮料,至唐宋遂为人家“一日不可无”了。这是指主要的作用而言。其实各个时期互相交错,不能机械地划分。
