1 Introduction In addition to reliability and durability, fuel economy is the most important indicator of a medium-speed diesel engine. These three indicators have not changed in the past and will not change in the near future, however, and pressure from the environment and the legislature will place additional demands. This article only discusses the economics of fuel and environmental protection. 2 Fuel Consumption Rate and History of Thermal Efficiency of Medium-Duty Diesel Engines Shows that almost 42% of the first oil crisis in 1973 rose almost 32% from 1920 to almost constant improvement. With the dramatic increase in fuel prices after 1973, the economics of fuel have become increasingly important.
