The need to extend Ethernet to support high data throughput network applications has spurred technology innovation. From the earlier development of the 10BASET twisted pair standard we can see that there is a dedicated link between two network nodes. Multi-port adapters and load balancing software improve server performance on an orderly scale. Today’s twisted pair full-duplex Ethernet (FDE) technology will bring fundamental changes in network performance. A simple way to deal with network overload is to double the bandwidth with the switched avoidance feature of Ethernet. This allows simultaneous sending and receiving of data on different twisted pairs. By using FDE and multi-threading network driver software, the server becomes a multitasking operating system capable of handling larger data transfers than traditional half-duplex Ethernet networks can handle. Increased bandwidth provides faster service to workstations, benefiting network users. Because FDE uses standard twisted-pair cabling, it is more available today at a fraction of the cost of other newer technologies such as ATM and FDDI.
