孝是中华文化的传统美德。相传尧舜时期就讲究孝。《尚书·尧典》说:舜面对父亲的愚顽、继母的凶狠、异母弟弟的傲慢逞强,却能以自己的孝行感动全家并和睦相处。《孝经》以孝为中心,比较集中地阐发了儒家的伦理思想。《孝经》传说是孔子自作,但南宋时已有人怀疑是出于后人附会。也有人指出,《孝经》是孔子“七十子之徒之遗言”成书于秦汉之际。《孝经》说孝是天地之规范,诸德之根本,主张把孝贯穿于人的一切行为之中,所谓“身体发肤,受之父母,不敢毁伤,孝之始也。立身行道,扬名于后世,以显父母,孝之终也。夫孝,始于事亲,忠于事君,终于立身”。
