Under the influence of androgens and FSH, cells are made to synthesize ABP. In adulthood, most of this protein is secreted into the seminiferous tubules and transported through the testicular mesh to the epididymis. However, it has recently been shown that most ABP is released into the bloodstream before the blood-testis barrier is formed. After sexual maturation, ABP is prevented from escaping the seminiferous tubule due to the formation of a cell-attachment complex, but even then, there is still ABP present in the blood after sexual maturation. So far, many experiments have suggested that ABP in the blood is not completely derived from the epididymis. It is likely that ABP will release into the blood vessels and lymphatics from the base of supporting cells. If so, the supporting cells secrete ABP in two directions: secretion from the top into the seminiferous lumen; secretion into the blood vessels and lymph from its basal part
