The aim of this short paper is to briefly review the most recent research on feed efficiency or feed utilization in lactating dairy cows.Different definitions of feed efficiency,related advantages and disadvantages for lactating dairy cows and beef growing animals (as a comparison) are discussed.The most recent progress in dairy residual feed intake (RFI) and the evolution of RFI prediction methods are compared.Using RFI aS an efficiency measure of feed utilization in dairy breeding program is encouraged.
