Side-chain polymers (SCPs) may form columnar liquid crystalline (φ) phase.Considering the topological preorder in one dimension the linear chains may select naturally the φ phase when they intend to self-assemble with an ordered packing fashion in the condensed state.However, in many cases, whether the φ phase can be realized is highly dependent on the structure of side-chain attached to the main-chain.Two typical examples of SCPs with φ phases are mesogen-jacketed liquid crystalline polymer and dendronized polymer,1,2 The main feature of these two polymers is that the bulky side-chains on every repeating unit can impart significant steric hindrance and thus make the main-chain to be well extended, resulting in the polymer with an overall rodlike conformation.The rodlike chains can pack parallel with each other, leading to the φ phase formation.In this context, the supramolecular column, which is the building block of φ phase, contains a single chain, as most of the previous reports suggested.
