Traditionally cancer therapy depends on surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy.Unfortunately, however, these conventional strategies do not work well in many cases.The examples include that surgery fails to treat hematologic cancers and both chemo-and radiotherapy are often with serious side reactions due to nonspecific killing of normal cells and eventually fail as resistance takes place.Gene therapy, particularly apoptosis-based therapy, is emerging as an alternative to the existing cancer therapies.It is well-known that survivin, a member of inhibitor of apoptosis (IAP) proteins family, is one of the most cancer-specific biomarkers, as demonstrated that it is expressed in almost all tumor cells but undetectable in most normal cells.
