Cardiac hypertrophy is initially compensatory, but it ultimately leads to heart failure. An increasing amount of evidence suggests that cyclic guanosine 3,5-monophosphate (cGMP) and its effector kinase, protein kinase G (PKG), play an important role in modulating cardiac hypertrophy and remodeling and exert cardioprotective effect through the regulation of calcium handling upstream.
