Effects of carbon dots on cell membrane permeability and enzyme catalytic activity

  Carbon dots(CDs)with various optical,photoelectronic,and well biocompatible properties have received much attention in the biological field.Recently,scanning electrochemical microscopy(SECM)has been a widely used technique to study living cells.In our group,SECM was used to explore the interaction between CDs and living cells in real time.We first provide quantitative data on cell membrane permeability in the presence of CDs with different surface functional groups.Our experiments demonstrate that although these CDs have very low cytotoxicity,they can still increase the cellular membrane permeability by 8%,13%,and 19%for CD–PEG,CD–OH,and CD–NH2 with different reaction times of 36,73 and 85 min for CD–NH2,CD–PEG,and CD–OH,respectively.Significantly,this kind of permeability was irreversible.This method can also be used to investigate the membrane permeability variation by C60 and SiO2 on a sigle living cell.
