  Wolbachia spp.is endosymbiotic bacteria that infect arthropods,and the spread of Wolbachia variants within host populations may affect host mtDNA evolution.The effects of Wolbachia infection on mtDNA variation was studied on Athetis lepigone from 12 geographical populations in northern China.Partial COI and wsp gene sequences were obtained from 423 individuals,including 46 infected and 377 uninfected ones.The average infection rate was 10.28%(range 0-26.19%).Three Wolbachia strains were recognised,and named wLep1,wLep2,and wLep3(KJ596655-KJ596657),respectively.The haplotype and nucleotide diversities were higher in most infected individuals than in uninfected ones.However,these mtDNA haplotype data had no relation with wsp sequence data and the same haplotype was found in both infected and uninfected individuals.Tajimas D and Fu & Lis F neutrality tests did not show a clear effect of Wolbachia infection on mtDNA variation.AMOVA analysis showed that genetic variation mainly existed within populations,and the proportion of variation within populations in uninfected individuals was higher than in infected ones.
