Obesity is arguably the most threatening world health epidemic of the modem era.Despite countless years of research, recommendations to improve prognosis are still general and population basedto balance energy intake with energy expenditure. While adherence to this recommendation forms the scientific backbone of most any successful weight management intervention it is sorely generalized and lacks the individuality for widespread success.Perhaps the most notable flaws in the energy balance-centric recommendations are failure to recognize the following observations from clinical practice: 1) energy balance is not fixed, but rather a moving target that evolves throughout a weight management intervention; 2) monotony in energy balance approach likely sets the client up for failure-physiologically and psychologically; 3) the approach to be used must take into account previous and current habits as well as stages of change-we are all a product of what we have been doing previously, not simply innate beings whose needs can be predicted from controlled scientific literature.
