A lesson for life
By Norris Martin
现实可能有很多不如意的地方,但就算生活给你的是垃圾,你同样应能把垃圾踩在脚底下,登上生命之巅。因此不要轻言放弃,不要对生活有太多的抱怨,因为不同的人生态度必将导致不同的结局。
One day, a farmer’s donkey fell down into a well(井). The animal cried piteously(可怜地) for hours as the farmer tried to figure out what to do.
Finally he decided the animal was old and the well needed to be covered up anyway, it just wasn’t worth it to save the donkey.
He invited all his neighbors to come and help him. They each grabbed a shovel and began to shovel dirt into the well.
At first, the donkey realized what was happening and cried horribly.
Then, to everyone’s surprise, he quieted down. After a while, the farmer looked down the well and was astonished at what he saw. With every shovel of dirt that hit his back, the donkey was doing something amazing.
As the farmer’s neighbors continued to shovel(铲) dirt on top of the animal, he would shake it off and take a step up.
Pretty soon, everyone was amazed as the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well and trotted(小步跑) off!
Change yourself, not the world

我们不能要求环境来适应自己,只能改变自己去适应环境,否则将会付出巨大的代价。
Once upon a time, there was a king who ruled a prosperous(繁荣的) country. One day, he went for a trip to some distant areas of his country. When he was back to his palace, he complained that his feet were very painful, because it was the first time that he had gone for such a long trip, and the road that he went through was very rough and stony. Then he ordered his people to cover every road of the entire country with leather. Definitely, this would need thousands of cow’s skin, and would cost a huge amount of money.
Then one of his wise servants dared himself to tell the king, “Why do you have to spend that unnecessary amount of money? Why don’t you just cut a little piece leather to cover your feet?”
The king was surprised, but later he agreed to the suggestion, to make a pair of shoes for himself.
Beautiful day, isn’t it?

爱是可以蔓延的,情绪是可以被感染的。如果你能让你的朋友从郁闷中解脱出来或者让身边的人会心一笑,那是你何尝不是为之莞尔?
The day started out bad. She overslept and was late for work. Everything that happened at the office helped make her very nervous. By the time she reached the bus stop for her homeward trip, her stomach had really hurt.
As usual, the bus was late and jammed. She had to stand in the aisle(过道,走廊). As the unsteady bus pulled her in all directions, her sadness deepened. Then she heard a voice, “Beautiful day, isn’t it?”
Because of the crowd, she could not see the man, but she heard him as he continued to comment on the spring scenery, calling attention to each approaching landmark(路标). This church, that park, this school, that firehouse. Soon all the passengers were gazing(凝视) out the windows. The man’s enthusiasm was so contagious(富有感染力) that she found herself smiling for the first time that day.
The bus reached her stop. Moving carefully toward the door, she got a look at their “guide”—an old gentleman with a beard, wearing dark glasses and carrying a thin, white cane.

Communication in marriage
By Erica Goode
A happy couple had always raised cucumbers and made sweet pickles together. The husband just loved to watch things grow. Thus he spent his winters studying the seed catalogues(目录) to get the best possible cucumbers. The whole family enjoyed preparing the soil, planting and caring for the plants. His wife loved to make sweet pickles. She studied the best recipes(食谱) and the best methods of preserving them. They were such a happy family and all the visitors went home with a jar of their famous pickles. People were surprised at this family that had a project to do together.
Finally, the man died. The next spring all the children returned home. They said to their mother, “We know how much you love making pickles, so we are going to prepare the garden and plant them for you.” The mother smiled and said, “Thanks a lot, children, but you don’t have to do any planting for I really don’t enjoy making pickles. I did that only because your father loved to grow the cucumbers so much.” The children were all surprised, but the youngest son was upset, because the father had told him that he really didn’t like growing cucumbers, but only did it to please the mother!
生活中我们不应该扮演旁观者的角色,而应尽自己所能去做一些善事。不要忽视个人的力量,因为如同聚沙可以成塔,如果每个人都能如此, 我们的生活就会越来越好。
The boy and the starfish
By Philip Shenon
One day, an old man was walking along the beach in the early morning and noticed the tide had washed thousands of starfish up on the shore. Up ahead in the distance, he saw a boy who appeared to be gathering up the starfish, and one by one throwing them back into the ocean.
He approached the boy and asked him why he spent so much energy doing what seemed to be a waste of time.
The boy replied, “If these starfish are left here like this, they will bake in the sun, and by this afternoon all of them will have been dead.”
The old man looked out as far as he could see and responded, “But, there must be thousands of miles of the beach and millions of them. What difference is throwing a few back going to make anyway?
The boy then held up the starfish he had in his hand and replied, “It’s sure going to make a lot of difference to this one!”
