  一、as用作连词
  
  1. 用于as...as...结构,其中第二个as为连词,其后常跟一个名词或代词,省略了与前面句子相同的谓语和其他成分,既可用于肯定句,又可用于否定句,否定句式也可用not so...as...
  如
  Tom runs as fast as John.(John后省略了runs)
  She does not sing so well as her sister.(her sister后省略了sings)
  2. as可表示时间,“当……的时候”,引导时间状语从句。as作此用法时,常与when,while比较。when后的时间状语从句的谓语既可是延续性动词,又可是短暂性动词,而while后必须是延续性动词;as侧重于主句与时间状语从句的两个动作同时发生,常译为“一边……一边……”。
  如
  When/While he worked in the factory,he learned a lot from the workers. 当他在那个工厂工作的时候,他从工人那儿学到了很多。(work为延续性动词)
  He jumped up when she called. 当她打电话来的时候,他跳了起来。(call为短暂性动词)
  I read the novel as I walked along. 我边走边读小说。
  3. 表示原因,引导原因状语从句,常与because,for,since辨析。because 表示直接原因,常用来回答why的提问;since因为,既然,表示显然的或已知的理由;for因为,由于,表示附加的或推断的理由,不放句首;as由于,鉴于,从句说明原因,主句说明结果,为常用词。

  4. 表示方式,引导方式状语从句,“按照,如同”。
  Do as I say. 按照我说的去做。
  5. 引导让步状语从句,“虽然,尽管”。as作此用法时,常与though,although比较。as 引导的让步状语从句,必须倒装,把名词(省略冠词)、作表语的形容词、副词或动词原形提到句首,用法与though相似,不同的是though引导的让步状语从句可以倒装,可以不倒装;although引导的让步状语从句不倒装,且多置于句首。
  如
  Child as he is,he knows a lot.(名词提到as之前,且省去冠词)。
  Much as he likes the bicycle,he won’t buy it.(副词much提到句首)
  Improbable as it seems,it’s true.(作表语的形容词提到句首)
  Object as you may,I’ll go.(情态动词后的动词原形提到句首)
  6. as可译为“随着”,这时常与with辨析。
  as为连词,后须跟句子,with为介词,后常用复合结构。

  随着时间的推移:as time goes by 或 with time going by
  
  二、as用作介词
  
  1. as用作介词时,意为“作为”。
  如
  As a teacher,he devoted himself to his students.
  2. as有时可译为“当……的时候”。
  如
  As a child,he preferred to be an artist, but he has changed his mind.
  
  三、as用作代词
  
  1. as用作代词时,常引导限定性定语从句。当先行词前有such,the same修饰时,关系代词常用as,译为“……一类的人或物”,构成such...as...和the same...as...结构。
  {1} 注意the same...as...和the same...that...的区别。
  the same...as...“相同的”,指的是同一类,而非同一个;the same...that...“同样的”,指的是同一个。
  如
  This is the same watch as I bought in the department store. 这块表跟我在商店里买的一样。(指的是同一类,并非同一块)
  This is the same watch that I lost in the hotel yesterday. 这就是我昨天丢在旅店的表。(指同一块表)
  {2} 注意such...as...与such...that...的区别。
  such...as... 引导的是定语从句,as后的定语从句缺少主语或宾语等句子成分,而such...that...为结果状语从句,that后必须是一个完整的句子,意为“如此……以至于……”。
  如
  The teacher set such a difficult problem as none of us worked out. (as后为定语从句,先行词problem在定语从句中充当work out的宾语)
  The teacher set such a difficult problem that none of us worked it out. (that后为一个完整的句子,句意为老师问了一个如此难的问题,以至于我们都答不出来)
  2. as可引导非限定性定语从句。
  常用于下列结构:as we all know/as is known to us all 众所周知
  as is hoped/expected/announced... 正如希望/预料/宣布……的那样
  as is often the case 情况通常都是如此
  as作此用法时,很容易与which引导的非限定性定语从句混淆。as引导的非限定性定语从句位置灵活,可置于句首,也可置于句中,且as有具体的含义“正如”,而which引导的非限定性定语从句只可置于句中,且which仅仅是一个引导词,无具体含义。

  As I explained on the phone,your request will be considered at the next meeting. 正如我在电话中解释的那样,你的请求在下次会议上将会被考虑。
  Jim passed the driving test,which surprised everyone in the office. 吉姆通过了驾驶考试,这让办公室的每个人都很吃惊。
  
  四、as...as...结构
  
  as well as 和……一样好,和,也
  as(so)long as 和……一样长,长达,只要
  as much as 和……一样多,多达,和……程度一样
  as soon as 和……一样快,一……就
  as far as 和……一样远,远达,直到,就……,据……
