1)debuts on US television this autumn, viewers will face an unusual challenge—trying to spot the American lead character actually played by an American.
In an unusual twist, an 2)unprecedented number of British actors are fronting the new shows on which television executives will pin their hopes of ratings glory.
3)Jonny Lee Miller, Kevin McKidd, Damian Lewis and 4)Michelle Ryan are among the UK stars who will play Americans in the new drama series unveiled by the networks.
The 5)influx of British and other foreign talent has led some to 6)dub it the year of the work visa and dialect coach. “A lot of dialect coaches will be in play.” Sharon Klein, head of casting at 20th Century Fox television, tells the Hollywood reporter. “It is the job to have this year.”
Foreign actors have taken lead roles in American series before, most notably Hugh Laurie who stars in Fox’s hit medical drama House and Anthony LaPaglia, the Australian Golden Globe and Emmy-winning actor who fronts Without a Trace.
But this year, it is on a scale never seen before. Almost all the new drama series with a single main character premiering next season have a foreign actor playing the role of an American. British actors have even been hired to play two of Hollywood’s most iconic female characters—the 7)Bionic Woman and Sarah Connor of the
8)Terminator 9)franchise.
McKidd, whose breakthrough role was in Trainspotting, stars in Journeyman, about a man who travels through time to help people, while in Life, Band of Brothers star Damian Lewis plays a former police officer who, after years of false imprisonment, returns to the force with a very different perspective.
Over at ABC, the lead in the new legal series Eli Stone is played by Jonny Lee Miller while Frances O’Connor, who starred in A.I and Mansfield Park, takes one of the four main roles in Cashmere Mafia, about a group of successful female executives in New York. Another lead is played by the Australian actress 10)Miranda Otto.
On CBS, the lead in the musical/murder mystery Viva Laughlin—based on the BBC black comedy Blackpool—is played by British actor Lloyd Owen. While Polly Walker, the UK actress who appeared in HBO’s Rome, takes the lead role in the Latin family ensemble Cane.
Seems like it’s a good time for British actors to get themselves to Hollywood.
American executives say UK actors’ ability to adopt an American accent has always made them appealing but the current hunger for new faces, unburdened by appearances in cancelled shows or failed pilots, has made them particularly appealing.
Marc Hirschfeld, NBC’s head of casting, said the trend was linked to the success of
11)American Idol, which turned unknowns into stars. “I think that American viewers want to discover unknowns and watch them become the next generation of TV stars,” he told the Hollywood Reporter.

At 17, Emma Watson, who plays Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter films, is the most successful female star, ranked joint fourth alongside her co-stars.

Mike Newell, the director of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, tops the list of directors, comfortably ahead of 5)Ridley Scott, whose three separate hits earned him second place.
