Luke, Callum, Michael, Ashton: If you don’t know these four names, you’d better study up. The foursome, better known as 5SOS to their fans, have been the talk of the town since hitting #1 on iTunes in almost 40 countries, with their debut[初次登场] single “She Looks So Perfect,” and that was just for pre-orders—not a single note[音符] of the song had even been heard yet. Then they sold out their entire North American tour in just five minutes. Not too bad for four teenagers, right? Yup, that’s right—they’re all under 20.
At first glance, these guys might have that typical[典型的] boy band look, but don’t let their perfectly styled hair and matching outfits[全套服装] fool you: They play their own instruments, co-write their songs, and count rock bands like Green Day and Blink-182 among their biggest influences[影响]. Luke Hemmings, at 17 years old, the group’s youngest member, says he also grew up listening to a lot of Good Charlotte. “They were the first band I obsessed[迷住] over. First album and first concert. They were big,” he says. “Those American 90s bands shaped us.”
Following their ten-city run, 5SOS opened for One Direction, for the second time, on their Where We Are tour this summer. Luke admits that being on the road with 1D, the first time around in 2013, was a great lesson for them. “Their work ethic[职业道德], like how hard they work and how well they treat their team, was just incredible[难以置信的],” he says. “I think it’s really important to have a good team around you. They’re the ones that are going to make you go the whole way, so you gotta treat them really well.”
The fans, it goes without saying, are pretty important, too. “The fans are just incredible. They’re so dedicated[一心一意的] to us,” says Luke. “We can never really repay[报答] them for what they do for us, but we do everything we can.”
With about nine million total Twitter followers and over 40 million YouTube views, it’s safe to say 5SOS knows a thing or two about giving the people what they want. “We never tried to be anything we weren’t,” explains Luke. “We just put up stuff[东西] that was real and I think people like real people, and fans really respond[响应] when you respond to them.”
