The red-letter date of July 1st, 2007 marks a 1)milestone as the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR). The historic day is a uniquely memorable moment for the people of Hong Kong. Hong Kong’s celebration’s calendar for the 10th anniversary runs from April through to December. The 460 events run by government and non-government organizations cover a wide variety, from 2)ceremonial and cultural occasions to exhibitions and conferences.
“I am very happy to see that the pride of the population is being expressed in many activities at the district level, which will provide 3)ample opportunities for members of the community to enjoy the spirit of the 10th anniversary celebrations,”said Donald Tsang (Zeng Yinquan), Chief Executive of HKSAR.
The big day itself promises to be a mix of ceremonial and celebratory events, including a flag-raising ceremony, a 4)parade, 5)carnivals and, of course, a spectacular fireworks display to light up the night sky in a 6)blaze of color. High officials from the Central People’s Government are expected to participate in the celebration.
To ensure the celebration a joyous event for the whole of Hong Kong, a socially 7)inclusive program, the “Celebrations for All”project, has been 8)launched. It aims to ensure all people participate in various celebration events and share the joy. Children born in 1997 will receive special offers from several theme parks in Hong Kong, including Hong Kong Ocean Park, Hong Kong Disneyland and Hong Kong Wetland Park.
There is also a theme song for the 10th Anniversary entitled “Just Because You Are Here,”created by local 9)composer Peter Kam (Jin Peida) and 10)lyricist Chan Siu-kei (Chen Shaoqi) and sung by local artists. In addition, a range of souvenirs, including a total of 13,000 sets of ?“The 10th Anniversary 11)Figurines,”will be produced for distribution to the public. Each set of figurines comprises two “Pandas”and two “10-year-old child”characters. China Post and Hong Kong Post will jointly issue 12)commemorative stamps, which will be the first Mainland-HKSAR joint issue of stamps.
All in Hong Kong, residents and tourist alike, will be offered free 13)admission to the usually fee-charging museums, indoor sports facilities and swimming pools on July 1st and 2nd, 2007. However, there will be a limit on the number for each 14)facility in order to avoid an over-concentration of visitors in a particular venue. Visitors will be admitted on a first-come, first-served basis.
To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the HKSAR, the Central People’s Government has chosen a pair of giant pandas from Wolong, Sichuan as a gift to Hong Kong. As a welcome gesture, an open competition was held to invite the public to suggest names for the new pair of giant pandas. The young male panda, officially named “Le Le,”and the female “Ying Ying,”are now living at their new home, Hong Kong Ocean Park. Hong Kong’s first giant pandas, “An An”and “Jia Jia?”also came from Wolong and arrived at Ocean Park in 1999.
