Two deadly explosions struck near the finish line of the Boston Marathon course on Boylston Street at about 3:00pm ET on April 15, 2013. At the time of the blasts, about two thirds of the competitors had finished the marathon. The bombs exploded about 13 seconds and near apart, leaving 3 dead (including an 8-year-old boy), and 267 injuries (including 10 with losses of limbs) among the 23,000 runners and 50,000 spectators.
The crowds always gather near the finish line for a fiercely competitive race to applaud the runners. Immediately after the tragedy, cheers and joys were replaced by panics and screams: a sheer tragedy!
People cannot help linking it to the 9/11 attacks in 2001, the bloodiest terrorist attack ever in American history in which four passenger airliners were hijacked by terrorists, crashing into six buildings including the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center. Part of the Pentagon was destroyed too. This terrorist attack resulted in 2,749 deaths.
The explosion happened in Boston has become another sanguinary terrorist attack the US suffered since the notorious 9/11 attacks. A senior US intelligence official pointed out that it was a well-planned attack based on the number of explosive devices, hiding places, and detonating time. President Obama said on 16th that "Any time bombs are used to target innocent civilians, it is an act of terror." The president stressed Tuesday that officials still did not know who carried out the attack or why -- or whether it was planned by a domestic or foreign terror group, or a lone-wolf individual attacker. But he vowed that whoever being responsible for the bombing that killed so many people at Boston "will feel the full weight of justice. We will find whoever harmed our citizens, and we will bring them to justice.”
With peace as the theme of the world in our time, terrorist attacks happened in the US in spate can be considered as accidental and regional events, which cannot change the thematic course of the world. However, the casualties are invariably tragic and miserable, especially the three young lives lost. We cannot help sighing that the world’s peace is still a reachless dream.
In the wake of the Boston Bombing, rumors and speculations for motivations emerged: retaliation against American’s hegemony policies, an act to protest American native racism policies, or an act related to the gun control policy. Whatever the reason was, bomb attacks targeting innocent civilians are brutal violations of the rules of peace in this world, not to mention that the victims of the Boston bomb attack were peace lovers of elders, children and youths. They were supposed to enjoy the joy and happiness brought by sport while becoming sacrifices of horrendous terrorism and retaliation. Sports events carry people’s hope and expectation for peace, friendship and happiness beyond countries, nations, races, religions and ideologies. The Olympic events will even be treated as a time for the world to halt warfare, showing sport’s supremacy in people’s minds. However, the terrorists apparently chose to ignore that. Therefore, the international and sport communities should get together and condemn such outrages. They should also appeal for world peace to resolve conflicts between races with the power of life and gather more peace lovers and strengths of the whole world.
