The teen movie market is filled with dramedies注1 like Heathers, Clueless, and Mean[卑鄙的] Girls—movies that perfectly capture[记录,保存] certain aspects[方面] of high school, from bullying to first loves to, well, mean girls, but don’t really nail[捕获] the emotion that comes with it all. Palo Alto, the directorial[导演工作的] debut[初次登台] from Gia Coppola (26-year-old cousin to Sofia and granddaughter of Francis Ford Coppola注2), does. It doesn’t hurt that it’s based off a book written by a youngish James Franco, or that it was directed by a 20-something, or that it stars a real-life high schooler Jack Kilmer (he filmed it before he graduated last year).
In the movie, leading lady Emma Roberts is a shy 14-yearold girl who attracts the attention of both a dreamy but disturbed soccer coach, played by James, and a cute skater dude[男人], played by Jack, who can’t stop getting himself into trouble. Though her character is nearly a decade younger than the 23-year-old actress, it was all too easy to jump back into the time of a freshman.“You never really forget being in high school,” she said. And acting opposite Jack, who had never been in a movie before, made it easy to feel young, too. “He’s a little heartthrob[万人迷]. I told him, ‘If I was a 17-year-old single girl, I would have such a crush on you.’”
It was a role she set her sights on years ago, so it’s no wonder it all came so naturally. In fact, Emma bought the novel the day it hit shelves. “I read it in three days and thought, ‘If they ever make this into a movie, I want to be in it,’” she said. “I got it right when it came out and read it as a teenager, and I just thought the characters were really honest. James wasn’t afraid to make everybody have flaws[缺点]. There weren’t good kids and bad kids, there were good people who did bad things and bad people who did good things, and I liked that it showed that not everything was black and white.”
In this film, Emma also stepped out of her comfort zone, and finally had the chance to play the good girl (after Celeste and Jesse Forever, We’re the Millers, American Horror Story: Coven[女巫大聚会]). So, basically the opposite of Madison Montgomery, her role on AHS. “Madison is a really fun character,”Emma said. “But April was so unlike me that it was cool to get to play her, too. I’m not that quiet or reserved[矜持的], so it was fun to go into the mind of somebody else.”
