School Bullying in Japan
In Japan two more children have killed themselves after being 1)bullied at school. Five children have taken their own lives since last August. A head teacher has also been found hanged in a forest after he was criticised for his response to a bullying incident in his school.
在日本，又有两名儿童在学校遭受欺侮后自杀。自去年8月以来，已有5名学生自杀身亡。一名班主任在对校园欺侮事件作出评论后，受到舆论批评。其后，他也被发现在森林里上吊自杀。
Both of the children who killed themselves this weekend had been bullied. A 12-year-old girl jumped to her death from a high building after her classmates 2)teased her for being short. A 14-year-old boy hanged himself after his classmates tried to 3)extort money from him.
It’s not new of course. Japan’s schools have long had a problem with bullying. After the 4)suicides of five young children in less than four months, there’s more attention being paid to the problem, but no one can agree what to do about it.
More attention, of course, can create its own difficulties. The head teacher killed himself after giving a news conference in which he was criticised for his handling of an extortion incident involving a pupil at his school.
Suicide in Japan is not just seen as an easy way out. Traditionally, it was regarded as a responsible way to deal with a problem when faced with no other 5)option. But last week, several schoolchildren wrote to the Education Minister threatening to kill themselves because no one would help them. He responded by 6)urging students not to write to him, but instead to try find people they could talk to about their difficulties.
It’s 7) awkward. Some fear 8)publicising such cases increases the 9)likelihood others will try to copy them. Others though, say the failures in the system need to be 10)exposed.

这是一个尴尬的局面。一些人担心大肆宣传这类案件会增加其他人模仿的可能性。另一些人则认为教育系统的失败需要被公诸于众。
