1882年至1884年,英国派驻重庆领事官谢立山淤受英国政府要求前往中国西南地区评估西南地区以及川江航道的商业前景。为此谢立山秘密地开展了大规模商业调研和情报搜集,这些资料为英国迫使重庆开埠提供了重要的信息。旅行结束后,谢立山将旅途中的所见所闻撰写成《华西三年:四川、贵州、云南旅行记》(Three Years in Western China;A Narrative of Three Journeys in Ss俪-ch忆uan,Kueichow,and Y俟n-nan)一书。1890年首次出版后,引起了西方国家的一时轰动,重庆乃至西南逐渐被西方人所熟知。时隔一个多世纪,中文译作《华西三年:四川、贵州、云南旅行记》将于2017年与中国读者见面,为读者了解近代英国外交官和探险家视角下重庆及西南地区社会发展提供了参考。
From 1882 to 1884, the British consul-general of the Chinese delegation to Mount Qelisa stuck to the British government’s request to travel southwest of China to assess the commercial prospects of the southwestern region and the Chuanjiang Waterway. To this end, Xie Lieshan secretly conducted a large-scale commercial research and intelligence gathering, the information for the United Kingdom forced the opening of Chongqing has provided important information. After the trip, Xie Lishan wrote what she saw and heard during her trip as “Three Years in Western China: A Narrative of Three Journeys in Ss, Kueichow , and Y 俟 n-nan). After more than a century, the Chinese translation of ”Three Years of Huaxi: Trip to Sichuan, Guizhou and Yunnan Travels" will meet with Chinese readers in 2017, providing readers with insights into the social development of Chongqing and Southwest China in the perspective of modern British diplomats and explorers reference.
