Completed in 2005 after a four-year build, the Turning Torso was designed by Santiago Calatrava. It stands at 623 feet and has 54 floors, comprising of offices and 149 private apartments. At a total cost of $220 million, the Turning Torso is the tallest building in Scandinavia and 1)uber-architect Calatrava’s first skyscraper.
Scandinavia is well known for its designer furniture, but certainly not for its skyscrapers. In fact, this is pretty much the only one. There is something amazingly 2)incongruous about this tall, thin tower rising sharply above its 3)sedate suburban surroundings. It not only looks nothing like the buildings around it, but it was also constructed and engineered in a completely different way.
This is basically how the Turning Torso works. 4)Effectively, it has a very strong core 5)column of concrete that runs up through the middle of the building. Now, this is fairly standard for a skyscraper. And what you then do is, around that, put nine cubes of five floors 6)stacked up on this tower. But they did two things that made the structure on this building very complex. The first, was to put a gap between each of these floor cubes. And that means that, effectively, every single one of these cubes has to be self-supporting and all the loads have to go back onto the central spine. So you have to massively increase the amount of 7)reinforcing and the strength of the concrete in each of those floors.
And then they did a second thing to make it really hard to build. They twisted it. So, by breaking it into the nine cubes, you had to take all the load back down the central 8)shaft, and, by twisting the building, it was incredibly difficult to get any of the pieces up into position. So, fundamentally, from day one they had created something that was always going to be a nightmare to build.
That’s no surprise because the Turning Torso started out life as a six-foot high abstract sculpture created by Santiago Calatrava. It’s typical of much of Calatrava’s work, combining organic, natural shapes with 9)state-of-the-art engineering.
When you get inside you really start to understand how the building’s structure work; central core with the floor plates 10)jutting out. Due to the twist in the building, no floor sits square on top of another. The floor plan of each level is unique. Feels like a cross between a spaceship and a lighthouse.
It’s just as exciting being inside this building as being outside looking at it. The apartments have strange 11)slanting windows, 12)curving walls and odd-shaped spaces. There are practically no straight lines anywhere. Everything seems to have a touch of the 13)unconventional about it. The incredible views all around are a 14)reminder of just how the building completely dominates its surroundings.
Santiago Calatrava has rightly received many 15)plaudits for his design of the Turning Torso, including an award for best skyscraper of the year. But perhaps just as important as the genius of the architect is the vision and determination of the Swedish developers that helped turn a small sculpture into a16)groundbreaking building. In just a few years this building has achieved 17)iconic status. Just as Paris has its Eiffel Tower, Malmo now has its Turning Torso.
What was once a depressed and rundown industrial area has become a 21st century urban 18)utopia, where bright young things live and work in stylish homes and offices; the Scandinavian dream made real. And above it all rises their symbol for the future.
