President: What about the moon?
Maddie: The collision[撞击] offset[抵消] some of the moon’s
forward velocity[速度], causing it to be drawn in by Earth’s gravity. The moon is now 30,000 kilometers closer to Earth.
Tom: Closer?!
Maddie: It really is quite extraordinary, but it has regained gravitational equilibrium[平衡]. It is once again in a stable orbit.
President: But what are the ramifications[衍生物,后果] of a closer orbit?
Maddie: Well, we’re still analyzing all the data, but the distance variable[变量] didn’t seem to be significant enough to have any major effect. Most people won’t even notice the difference.
President: Are we in any danger?
Maddie: Well…
President: Took a hell of a hit, didn’t it? And maybe werewolves[狼人] are gonna start comin’ out in the middle of the afternoon – I don’t know. Dr. Rhodes, I’m not a scientist. But what I don’t want is Chicken Little注1 out there telling people that the sky is falling.
Maddie: I understand. From all analysis at this point, the moon is stable.
CE: Teens
Alex: When did these anomalies[异常现象] begin?
Student: After the collision.
Alex: More precisely, after the moon repositioned its
orbit.
Maddie: But the moon’s magnetic influence[磁影响] isn’t strong enough to cause these kind of effects.
Student: Or so we thought.
Maddie: Or so we know. I mean, astrophysics[
is an exact science. Obviously something’s happening here that we don’t quite understand, but what you’re suggesting’s impossible…
Alex: No, no, no, Maddie. It wasn’t that long ago people thought the world was flat, right? I think if we’re gonna make any headway here, if we’re gonna get anywhere, we need to start thinking beyond what we believe is possible.
Maddie: …Okay. (Maddie’s cell phone rings.) Have you found anything?
Roland: Yes, and it’s from our meteor, I’m sure. Hold on to your socks[当心,别被吓倒]. I believe what we have here is a fragment[碎片] from a brown dwarf[红矮星].
Maddie: A brown dwarf?!
Student: What’s a brown dwarf?
Alex: Remnant[残余] of a dead star. There’re millions of them floating around the universe. After a star burns out, it packs itself into very, very compressed matter.
Roland: Very, very, very compressed.
Alex: Nobody’s ever actually had their hands on one before.
Roland: Until now. I believe I’m in line for a Nobel.
Maddie: Are you sure?
Roland; Well, further testing is needed, but yes, I am sure. My guess is two of them collided[碰撞] and smashed each other up some time ago, sending a good-sized chuck of it into our neighborhood. Our moon was a heavier hit than we thought. New images are showing deep subsurface[地下的] fissures[裂缝].
We believe that a piece of the brown dwarf is still
lodged[卡住] inside the moon.
Maddie: What’s its mass[
Roland: Doesn’t disappoint. About 12 sextillion注2 tons.
Maddie: That’s twice the mass of Earth.
Roland: That’s not all. This is heavily magnetized. Not only is the moon now twice as heavy as the Earth, we have a gigantic magnet floating up there above us.

They’re trying to reduce expenditure by 10%, but they’re not making much headway.
“in line for…”
She’s in line for promotion.
类似表示特大数目的还有septillion(1024)、octillion(1027)等等。
Reporter: Homeland Security has issued a new warning
now. They do not feel the event is over. There may, in fact, be a new threat on this side of the Atlantic. We’re getting new reports now. Hundreds of people in Germany have been affected, witnesses claiming to have been lifted into trees then falling suddenly when the event has ended. Casualties[人员伤亡] are mounting[增长]. Similar reports in England and elsewhere. Now we’re being told the same can be expected here. If one wants evidence, they simply need to look outside and see how big the moon looks, hovering[盘旋] like a huge bird of prey[猛禽]. The world waits, not knowing where another surge[汹涌] might strike. The moon hovers huge in the sky, closer than it’s ever been before. Authorities have issued warnings for the entire North American continent. People continue to take
precautions[防范]. But how does one hide from gravity?
(In the White House)
President: This is absolutely certain.
Maddie: Yes.
President: How long?
Maddie: The moon will make impact with Earth in 39 days.
President: What happens to Earth?
Maddie: Mr. President, an asteroid[小行星] nine miles across killed the dinosaurs. An asteroid 90 miles wide would
vaporize[蒸发] the oceans and sterilize[使成不毛] this planet. The moon is more than 2,200 miles in diameter[直径]. There won’t be a planet Earth.

President: My fellow Americans, we have all been
witness to the horrific[可怕的] events that have taken place over the past several days. I wish I could come to you now and tell you that the worst is over.
As has been recently reported, the moon has, in fact, moved into an orbit that has put it on a collision course with Earth. We have 36 days to stop it. The United States, along with other nations of the world, have implemented[执行] Operation Safeguard, using nuclear weapons to destroy the moon before it reaches
us. Engineers and scientists have been working
together from all over the world to accomplish this enormous undertaking[事业]. The missiles will be launched today.
This is not the end. This will be our finest hour. It will be remembered as the moment when our world
became one people with one common cause. We are not American. We are not Chinese, or French, or
Russian. We are one people on a lonely planet.
We will pray together, we will help each other, and we will not abandon our values, our self-respect, or the rule of law in this time of anxiety.
Be with your loved ones, and be comforted in the knowledge that this government and all our friends throughout the world are doing everything we can.
Thank you. And God bless you all.
