“Fake it until you make it!”

Sylvia (CE): Do you think there is some sort of relationship between your excellence in oral English and your personality? Are you a talkative person, eager to speak your mind?
Chen Hui: I think there should be some relationship between these two, and I believe if you are [a] talkative person, definitely your English—I mean the oral ability—must be very good; must be better than [the English of] other people who are very silent. In my case, however, I think I’m not very talkative because I’m only talkative in the area I’m interested in, like English literature and something going to my field. Most of the time I’m very quiet ’cause I…I like to read and think.
When I was [a] undergraduate, whenever the teacher posed a question, I would grasp it, no matter I knew it or not. I think it’s really important just to put your hand(s) up and before you really think of an answer. And this can really push you to think because you are in a situation that you can not come back, and so you really need to try to find the words to answer the teacher’s questions.
Patrick (British Council): Considering of the achievement that you’re making in the field of English, do you have any little secrets of learning English to share with our audiences of Crazy English; any do’s and don’t’s that you probably like to share with us?
Chen Hui: Well, I think at the beginning, I chose to write, to keep diaries, and I think it’s really good to train your thinking pattern to think in English. Although I’m not sure whether I can think in English, just “fake it until you make it.” And you’ll feel that, it will give you a feeling of achievement, because you can write so long a passage. And now, when I’m…I’m now studying in post-graduate school, I have a higher expectation of myself and I choose to read a lot. Because when your English has come to a level…a certain level, what you should do is to…to get different information to deepen your knowledge system, and these are potentials for you to speak. When you communicate, this will make you professional. And so, writing and reading—one is output; the other is input—and these two can…I think can help most English learners to master this language.
Patrick: Yeah. That’s a very good suggestion.
