Welcome to the headquarters of Google—the 1)ultra-successful internet search engine, which was founded by Larry Page and Sergey Brin as university students in 1996.
The world’s favourite search engine launched its own advertising programme, mapping service and translating service. It has grown into a company worth around 50 billion pounds.
Google’s headquarters is situated in Mountain View, California in 2)Silicon Valley. Inside the hi-tech property, with its swimming pools and 3)gourmet restaurants, smiling groups of casually dressed young men and women can be seen strolling around. Throughout the corridors between the four buildings, there are all sorts of Google 4)memorabilia on display. They even employ guides who specialize in explaining Google’s history to people. There are 5)lava lamps everywhere, as well as free coke and candy all over the place. They’ve also got huge, multicolored exercise balls everywhere.
The 6,000 workers at the Google’s headquarters can turn up at whatever time they like, wear whatever they like and even take along their children or dogs. When not 6)beavering away at their work stations they can be seen playing 7)Scalextric or 8)Twister game, 9)duelling with 10)light sabres, or getting their hair cut.
The atmosphere in Google headquarters is absolutely casual. Couches are everywhere, so staff can have a lie down when they need to and take a break. They even often have meetings at the pool table or in the corridors.
There’s a rule within Google: that there must be food within 100 feet of every employee. It’s said that there was once an engineer who felt a bit 11)ripped off about that rule because his nearest food counter was 120 feet away, so he asked for the error to be corrected, 12)tongue in cheek. The relevant department replied: “There’s a restaurant right above your desk, and you are definitely less than 100 feet from that one.” Maybe Google headquarters is the home to the most 13)pampered workers in the world.
It is the dream environment for the ultra-intelligent programmers and engineers, most of whom have been at university all of their adult lives.
“There are pool tables, cafes and lounges all over the place. It’s like a student house built on a millionaire’s budget. Writing computer code can be exhausting, but this place is like a fun-park and a resort rolled into one,” one said.
Rumor has it, a 14)dude who had just joined Google had not been able to find a flat, so he lived at Google headquarters for a month. He lived a lot better than Tom Hanks in 15)The Terminal. Meals are provided, couches are everywhere, there are showers in the bathrooms, a 16)gym and a 17)swimming machine. There are even pianos in music rooms. Better than the facilities at home! The dude didn’t leave Google headquarters for a month straight.
The atmosphere may sound 18)bizarre—but it works. The firm keeps its 19)boffins so happy to prevent them being 20)poached by rivals.
Larry says that their approach to running a business, which has 21)outsiders thinking they are “out of control”, helps keep the opposition guessing.
He says: “I would rather have people think we are confused than let our competitors know what we are going to do.”
CEO Eric Schmidt adds: “When they saw how we operated—with lava lamps and 22)scooters all over the place—everybody thought we were idiots. Then they found out how well we were doing!”
Larry and Sergey always dress in black T-shirts—but put on white laboratory coats when approving workers’ internet inventions.
And despite being in control of one of the world’s biggest companies, their desks are 23)strewn with 24)Lego blocks. They also love coming up with bizarre ideas.
Sergey recently built a 25)bazooka-26)wielding robot, while Larry began work on a life-size statue of company CEO, Eric.
Currently on the list of approved company objectives is “building a space elevator to the moon.”
