In this article, we used animal carcinogenesis assay to observe the effect of endogenous and exogenous epidermal growth factor (EGF) on the efficacy of dimethyl hydrazine (DMH)-induced colorectal cancer in Wistar mice. Sixty rats were randomly divided into four groups: high EGF group, normal group (control group), low EGF group, single EGF group, and continuous induction of cancer with DMH for 20 weeks. The results showed that the positive rate of cancer induction, the average number of negative tumors, and the average volume of tumors in the high EGF group were significantly higher than those in the normal group and higher than in the low EGF group (P<0.05). No tumor was generated in the single EGF group. It suggests that EGF can enhance the efficacy of DMH-induced WISTRR murine colon cancer, but it cannot independently cause cancer. In this experiment, EGF has a similar effect as a carcinogen.
