It has been more than 30 years since it eradicated malaria in Italy. As a result of the growing population in the tropics, there has been a marked increase in cases of malaria. In the past 10 years, 60 to 160 cases of malaria were imported each year, up to 1978 and as many as 243 cases of malaria. Malaria infections caused by blood transfusions are more frequent than in the past: 2.75 cases per year from 1972 to 1975, and 3.75 cases per year from 1976 to 1980, usually among drug addicts and hospital staff.
