It is now known that during fasting small intestine migratory motor complex (MMC) phase III occurs cyclically every few hours. Some patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) to enhance the perception of this normal motility is likely to be one of the factors in the pathogenesis of symptoms of the abdomen. The authors speculate that if IBS patients congenitally perceive expansion or contraction of the small intestine, this phenomenon may be most evident in the third phase of the MMC, especially at the onset of the duodenum and MMC.
