在早期革命文学中同时并存“解放”叙事与“革命加恋爱”式的情爱叙事两种模式,前者淡化现代革命的“自由”理念而专注于“解放”诉求,以“阶级性”为核心并彰显阶级对立与斗争,最终走向革命暴力展示;后者则试图在革命话语与人性话语、革命冲动与情爱追求的冲突与互动中去表现人,从而在主题上更加具有歧义性与复调性。“左联”成立之后,一方面通过“大批判”的方式清除了早期革命文学中“革命加恋爱”的情爱叙事模式,另一方面在文学批评领域内通过对符合左翼文坛要求的作品加以及时肯定、赞赏的方式逐步将文学引导到既定的规定上来,“解放”叙事逐渐取代了原先的情爱叙事。
