“Chinese without teacher self-taught” is a fast-paced textbook compiled by British sinologist Gary Lixis in the early years exclusively for foreigners who started Chinese. This article summarizes the reasons why it can make Chinese learners unable to learn from each other by researching the phonetic, lexical, grammatical and sentence patterns of the book: annotating the Chinese in English and building a simple phonetic system; Text, tone, tone, meaning explanation; topic design close to everyday life, content based on spoken language self-study; simple sentence, grammar simple, easy to replace the use of vocabulary and so on. It is hoped that the research on this book will provide some inspiration for the teaching of Chinese as well as the preparation of Chinese teaching materials.
