Objective To investigate the significance of d ecompression of optic nerve in the re habilitation of traumatic optic neu ropathy following head trauma.Method Surgical treatment was performed on16patients suffered from traumatic neuropathy following head trau-ma.Fragments ,hematoma, necrotic b rain tissue resulting from fracture of orbital bone were removed and fron tal and orbital fracture or malpo-sition corrected by craniotomy thro ugh valve of frontal bone in 15patien ts.Optic canal was probed and sheath of optic nerve was cut open for decompression of optic nerve.Front otemporal wound was made in 1case with superior orbital fissure syndrome and decompression of optic canal and abrasion of superior orbital fis sure were performed through outer side of orbital point.Result Surgical treatment was effective in12cases(75%),exophthalmus in 2cases was corrected. Conclusion Decompression of optic nerve throug h frontal bone or frontotemporal is e ffective in enhancing visual acuity in patients with traumatic optic neuropathy following head trauma.
