Objective: To compare the effects of three different surface treatments on the surface roughness and surface free energy of all-ceramic materials. METHODS: Two types of zirconia (LAVA Plus, Wieland) and two kinds of E.max Press (ELDC) were selected and manufactured into disk-like specimens (13 mm in diameter and 1 mm in thickness) according to the manufacturer’s method. The above four groups of all-ceramic materials were divided into the following three sub-groups according to different surface treatments: rough grinding, polishing and glazing. The surface roughness (Sa) of the sample surface was measured by a three-dimensional topography scanner. The surface tension of each sample was measured by a surface tensiometer and the surface free energy was calculated. Results: The roughness of coarse grinding group was significantly higher than that of polishing group and glazing group. For the two zirconia ceramics, there was no significant difference (P> 0.05) between roughness group and glazed group For both glass ceramics, the roughness of the polished group was significantly lower than that of the glazed group (P <0.05). The surface free energy of the glazed group was significantly higher than that of the corresponding coarse grinding group and polishing group (P <0.05) There was no significant difference between the two groups. Conclusion: Polishing and glazing all can significantly reduce the surface roughness of all-ceramic materials. For zirconia ceramics, it can achieve the similar glazing surface roughness. For glass ceramics, polishing can obtain a more smooth surface. The surface free energy of glazed all-ceramic materials was significantly higher than that of the polished group.
