According to the Science Policy Outlook, the National Institutes of Health's patenting of 2,722 partial human genomic sequences caused confusion and anxiety in the research and business communities. What is worrying in the research community is that while NIH has only a portion of the code sequence for these genes, it requires patenting of the entire gene. Some people think that, according to the current federal technology transfer law of the United States, NIRA has no choice but to win patent rights. If the government does not own part of the patents, the institute can apply for patents, otherwise the United States will lose these patents in foreign countries.
