Impact of glacial thinning on sea level rise The northern part of the Patagonian Ice Sheet lies within Chile, while the southern part straddles Chile and Argentina. It is the largest piece of ice in the southern hemisphere covering between 4,200 and 13,000 square kilometers. It has a huge east-west slope, the cracked ice and meltwater flowing to the west and the ice bed flowing into the lake to the east. However, at present, the region does not obtain too much reliable mass balance data, but only some uncertain data to speculate the impact of ice changes on sea level rise and fall. In the recent more than half a century, the fronts of these glaciers have receded, and the measurement of the thickness of the ice sheet in the ablation zone shows that the ice sheet is rapidly decreasing
