II. DETERMINING THE LEVEL OF ANCIENT FLOODS Once the crest levels of flood floods have been identified based on studies of silt layers and flood traces deposited by floodwaters, the researchers must convert these data to pale flood flows using several hydrodynamic methods. In order to accurately describe the geometry of the channel, detailed measurements must be made for each study channel. The measured cross-sections should be vertical to the direction of the paleocurrents, and they should be used to account for the overall expansion, contraction and slope change of the study channel. Figure 3 shows the study section of the Verde River in central Arizona, USA. Here with 20 cross-sectional to determine its geometry.
