荣称“天下第一坝”的三峡工程,混凝土纵向围堰位于中堡岛右侧,是三峡主体工程的组成部分。全长1228.45m,其中坝身段长106m,大坝上游段长544.21m,大坝下游段长578.24m。最大高度90m。混凝土168.14万m~3,其中84.2％为碾压混凝土(RCC)。在一期土石围堰保护下进行施工。在三峡工程施工期间其作用是将原中堡岛左右河床(后河与大江)分成一期、二期导流。大江截流后则是二期围堰的组成部分,保护二期工程施工(大江基坑开挖和大江溢流坝及左岸发电厂房)以及右岸明渠通航。
