The ability of the blind to distinguish motion targets by “panning” inspired Kay’s to consider using a modified FM-CW sonar system for heart testing. His starting point is: cardiologists diagnose heart disease, want to study is the heart movement (displacement and speed). This idea is seen as a great improvement in the well-known technique of ultrasound-frequency CW Doppler shift tones to measure blood flow and tissue motion.
