在数据积累庞大的今天,大量数据的建置、转移、搜寻、管理、保存和恢复,从而形成一门最新的学问。据国际权威的IDC预测,至2000年,每年数据增长率高达96%。对于网络数据量在数十GB以上的用户来讲,单独的磁带机已经不是理想的备份系统,如采用人工方式备份,需频繁更换磁带,备份的准确性和完整性不能保证(如备份没有启动或放错磁带),且操作复杂,影响系统的总体效率和自动化水平;磁带只限于存放数据的功能,不易归档及规范化管理。因此,智能型的磁带库(Library)便应运而生。
