Track testing and simulation studies have shown that long stroke (travel up to 15.88mm) normally open bearing (CCSB) mounted on long tankers provides the best overall performance in passing curves, balancing vertical loads and high speed stability. After heavy bogie steering resistance test confirmed that often touch the side bearing is usually run better than the double roller bearing. The TTCI conducted these tests on behalf of the American Society of Railroad Equipment Engineering and Machinery Research Council to reduce the stress on the rails. In 2001, a guidance document required that all interchangeable vehicles (vehicles that can be used on various railroad company lines in the United States) should be mounted with a normally open side bearing. The Equipment Engineering Council recommends that the TAC be installed on all new vehicles (or modified vehicles intended to extend the service life and load-carrying quality) as of January 1, 2003 in accordance with AAR Operation Manual Rule 88 Side bearing. The rest of the other vehicles will have to consider installing such side bearings after this date. The test plan requires four types of track test and simulation. In addition, six vehicle designs should be simulated independently. This technical summary focuses on the tests carried out on long tanker trucks (TILX301711). The standard double-roller side bearing is evaluated together with four types of common side-contact bearings (long stroke, long stroke auxiliary roller, standard stroke, standard stroke auxiliary roller). The orbit used by the Transportation Technology Center is the wheel and rail mechanical loop (with dynamic curve area and transition test track). As the test requires both the vehicle and the rail to be used under the best conditions, the test results in the report apply only to similar conditions.
