Barnard used the social system approach for the first time to study organizational and management issues. Put forward a refreshing organizational theory. He not only advanced the analysis of formal organizations but also introduced further research into informal organizations and combined formal requirements with the needs of individuals in dichotomies of effectiveness and efficiency. His theory of authority, his call for ethical leadership, the determination of the universal elements of a formal organization, and the discussion of informal organizations are all remarkable contributions to the evolving management thinking.
