During World War II, a reporter asked the British Prime Minister Winston Churchill: “Shakespeare and India, which is more important to you?” India was Britain’s largest colony at the time. Its wealth, population and land should be said to have enough temptations for Britain. However, Churchill replied: “I would rather lose 50 India, and I can not lose a Shakespeare.” As Professor Zhu Yongxin, the founder of new education, put it: Most of the most vitally powerful nations in the world are those who are passionate about reading and are good at reading. In teaching, Chinese teachers should focus on cultivating students good reading habits; stimulate students’ strong reading interest; expand students’ reading horizons; enhance students’ reading ability and guide them to learn Chinese and use Chinese in daily life. To effectively carry out extra-curricular reading and enhance students ’reading ability in a down-to-earth manner is the need of the development of Chinese education and the need of quality education and students’ growth.
