OBJECTIVE: To investigate the changes of microglial and leukocyte in brain during different periods of reperfusion in Mongolian gerbil (hereinafter gerbils) cerebral ischemia-reperfusion model and to find out its possible mechanism. Methods: The changes of microglial and leukocyte infiltration and ultrastructure in gerbil brain were observed under light microscope and electron microscope. Results: It was found that microglia increased to the maximum at 4h after reperfusion. Leucocytes then increased with the extension of reperfusion time. Conclusion: Microglial cells are very sensitive to ischemia and hypoxia, and their function is to clear phagocytic necrosis tissue. Leukocytes and cerebral ischemia related.
