After the construction and commissioning of the National Ignition Facility (NIF) is completed, an official ignition test will begin in 2010. Commissioning efforts included a series of optimization and testing experiments to obtain the key laser parameters and ignition target parameters necessary for the ignition experiment. These commissioning work will be completed before the first ignition target. Ignition experiments on the performance requirements of the target mainly reflected in: power to learn performance, symmetry, shock wave timing and the ballistic fluid dynamics. As part of the national lighting project, detailed planning and theoretical simulations on the commissioning of these key areas are currently under way. Research on commissioning and diagnostic methods is under way on several existing devices. These include the OMEGA Laser Facility at the Laser Energy Learning Laboratory at the University of Rochester, the Z Facility at Sandia National Laboratory, and the Trident Laser Facility at Los Alamos National Laboratory. Ongoing targets are led by General Atomics, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and Los Alamos Laboratory.
