The idea of using the external electric field perpendicular to the solid surface to control the surface potential barrier caused by band bending in the solid to improve the adsorption and catalytic properties of the solid was proposed. The effect of different electric field intensities on the adsorption properties of SnO_2 in a mixture of oxygen and nitrogen at 434K was studied. The electric field was found to significantly alter the equilibrium oxygen uptake. The electric field increases from -35 V to +35 V resulting in oxygen adsorption
