I. Overview The output of world fishmeal has risen year by year since 1983, an increase of 27% in 1984, a further 10% increase in 1985 and an increase of 22% in 1986. The development of fishmeal processing in Chile and Peru is the main cause of the increase in world fishmeal production and their fishmeal processing industry has recovered significantly since 1983. In 1986, Chile’s fishmeal production exceeded 1 million tons for the first time. In the years prior to 1985, fishmeal processing in Chile and Peru used almost exclusively sardines as raw materials, but in 1986 the emphasis was shifted to the use of anchovy, thus affecting the recovery of anchovy resources in South American waters .
