编辑学是一门实践性、应用性很强的学科。学了编辑学之后,如果能从理论上说得头头是道而不能动手编好书、编好刊,那就无异于历史上“纸上谈兵”的赵括。但是,如果以为学编辑学就是学些编书、编刊的手艺,只会“照着葫芦画瓢”,对理论一窍不通或一知半解,也就难以创造性地做好编辑工作,难以提高、发展编辑工作,难以成为一个编辑家,同样也是不够的。编辑理论是在编辑实践活动基础上升华而成的,它来自实践。但编辑理论形成后,又会反过来推动编辑工作的前进。对做好编辑工作来说很重要的预见性,也不仅来自编辑实践,更来自编辑理论的力量。哲学上说的:脱离实际的理论是空洞的理论,没有理论指导的实践是盲目的实践,这对于编辑学来说,同样是完全适用的。
