The rise of the civil rights movement in the United States in the 1950s and 1960s triggered the rise of the women’s liberation movement. Women in the “edge of the brink” have begun to join the social tide for democratic power in order to fight the stereotyped prejudices imposed on them. Under this impact, the American society at that time experienced a “crisis of complete social, cultural and fundamental values.” Susan Sontag has created two different female figures in Catherine and Emma in The Volcano Lovers. Although they are the victims of the patriarchal society, Emma dared to get rid of the shackles of women in the traditional society and emphasized Self-subjective value, bold pursuit of freedom and love embodies the awakening and development of women’s subjective consciousness and right awareness after the civil rights movement.
