As the Chinese market continues to open to the outside world, as China joins the World Trade Organization, while a large number of foreign products flow into the Chinese market while China’s products flow to foreign markets, one of the most important films is the movie. With the spread of the Internet, more cinemas are not shown but can be downloaded online, with an increase in the number of films available and the number of people contacting the film. However, it is not hard to find out that some film subtitles do not express themselves, and viewers feel the movie is “weird”; some are even unintelligible. There are two reasons for this: on the one hand, because many movies are not translated by regular translation companies or translators but by amateurs for translation, the quality is poor. On the other hand, translators with shallow qualifications will also be translucent because of poor translation To understand the problem. However, movie appreciation undoubtedly takes the lead in understanding and obtaining the same feelings as the source language audience. Movie subtitle translation should also achieve the standard of achieving the same understanding and feeling of the source language audiences for the target audience. The theory of functional equivalence proposed by Eugene Nida points out that translating does not require a rigid correspondence on the surface of the text, but to achieve functional equivalence between the two languages in order to give the audience the same effect. This theory no longer discusses translation from the superficial and purely ideographic perspectives. Instead, it considers the effects on audiences. Given the features and functions of movie subtitle translation, this theory is well suited to guide movie subtitle translation. This paper takes Filler in the foreign film Touch Freely as an example to study the function of functional equivalence theory in its translation.
